The Baptism
Oil on Linen
16×20

In the wake of starting another painting, The Conditions of the Heart, I found myself drawn back to this image from four years ago, which sits with the depths of pain and how misery is simply the act of the old you dying, so the new you can be born. This is the baptism – the moment where you bare the nakedness of your wounds so you can forgive yourself and transform your suffering into wisdom. These wounds I did to myself in a fit of a panic attack many years ago.

I’m painting this as a prayer for all of those struggling in their dark places right now. Allow yourself to fail and grieve without shame. I believe, it’s only when you can sit in your misery in grace that you can begin to truly feel the gratitude of life.
